Continued from IDEA World Fitness Convention: Part 1

Working out all the time or not working out at all creates an autonomic nervous system imbalance.  The autonomic nervous system controls all the functions of the body such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and hormone production.  90% of all prescription medications are written because of an imbalance in this autonomic nervous system, for example high blood pressure, sleep disorders, decreased sexual performance, depression, anxiety and metabolism issues.

There is a time to workout and a time to rest.  At the cellular level, your cells do not know the difference between the death of a loved one and overtraining, a financial crisis and overtraining, a divorce and overtraining.  To your cells, stress is stress!  The key to health, vitality and weight loss is BALANCE.

My second lecture “Effective Flexibility Training, You Don’t Have To Tie Yourself Into Knots.”

It is not uncommon for this class to be packed and this time was no exception.  I estimate 80-100 students packed this lecture.  As I discussed above, most trainers feel that they have to be “doing” all the time J.  This presentation was a lecture/lab.  I demonstrated length tension (flexibility tests) for neck rotation, pec minor/major, spine rotation, hip rotators, hip flexors, quads and hamstrings.  It is important to perform an assessment because if you are not assessing you are guessing.

After each length tension assessment, I showed the students how to perform a very easy but effective stretch.

Following the lecture I held a half hour question and answer session.  This is my favorite aspect of teaching because I truly never know what the question is going to be and I love the challenge.  Then it was off to LAX for a “red eye” flight back to Fort Lauderdale.

Until next time, keep taking responsibility for your health and living your dream.

Better Body. Better Life.
